What are the differences between a clinical psychologist, a clinical social worker, and a psychiatrist?
A clinical psychologist typically holds a Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) or Psy.D. (Doctor of Psychology) in psychology. Their extensive training requires rigorous coursework, a doctoral dissertation, and a full clinical internship, with supervised experience spanning psychotherapy, research, psychological testing, and consultation. This path usually takes at least six years beyond a bachelor’s degree, plus an additional year of supervised postdoctoral clinical experience required by many states, including New York.
A clinical social worker holds an M.S.W. (Master of Social Work), which includes specialized coursework and supervised clinical experience requiring two years beyond a bachelor's degree. Social workers who specialize in clinical practice typically complete several years of supervised post-master’s experience in a clinical setting (such as a community mental health agency) to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).
A psychiatrist holds an M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) or D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine). Following four years of medical school, their training includes a medical internship and a multi-year psychiatry residency in a hospital or medical center. Because of their medical background, psychiatrists can prescribe medication.
How do I choose a therapist? Which professional is best for me?
For psychotherapy or counseling, your choice should depend on finding a professional who possesses the specific training and experience tailored to your unique concerns. Because the topics discussed in therapy are often challenging and deeply personal, feeling completely comfortable with your therapist is essential.
Every mental health profession has accrediting agencies that maintain strict educational standards. When evaluating a professional, ensure they have been trained at a nationally accredited university and program. In psychology, for instance, the American Psychological Association (APA) accredits doctoral training and clinical internship programs. A psychologist with a degree and internship from APA-accredited institutions has met rigorous national standards. Finally, verify that the therapist you are considering is fully licensed to practice in your state, preferably at the highest level of training.
How much does treatment cost?
Fees for consultations, psychological testing, and psychotherapy vary depending on the distinct goals and duration of your care. For instance, the financial structure for weekly long-term psychotherapy differs from that of a standalone consultation.
You will have the opportunity to discuss financial logistics and receive detailed, specific information during your initial contact with Dr. Wong. To provide a general baseline, Dr. Wong’s standard fee for individual psychotherapy sessions is $400.
Can I use my medical insurance?
Many clients utilize their medical insurance to help cover the cost of care, while others prefer to pay for mental health services out-of-pocket. Self-paying offers a higher level of clinical privacy, as most insurance carriers require a review of your diagnostic treatment records and may utilize that information for broader underwriting purposes.
While most medical insurance plans do provide outpatient mental health benefits, coverage varies significantly. It is highly recommended that you contact your insurance carrier to verify your specific benefits before scheduling your initial consultation.
Please note that Dr. Wong operates as an out-of-network provider and does not bill insurance companies directly; clients are responsible for all session fees at the time of service. However, Dr. Wong frequently works with major insurance carriers in this capacity and will gladly complete any necessary clinical forms or documentation required for you to seek out-of-network reimbursement.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule an appointment?
If you need to change your appointment time, please contact Dr. Wong at least 24 hours in advance. With the exception of emergencies, cancellations or rescheduling requests made within the 24-hour window will be subject to the full session fee.
